"Trace Me"
Project type
Installation
Location
UIC, Chicago, IL, USA
In this installation, participants were invited to stand before a blank white wall while someone traced the outline of their shadow in crayon. Each silhouette acted as a temporary projection that becomes a lasting mark, a physical impression left where a body once stood. As more people joined in, the wall became a rich tapestry of overlapping forms — a collective landscape of traces where moments, movements, and presences accumulate.
What began as individual outlines evolved into a layered record of all who paused long enough to be seen. These markings do not simply fade into the background; they remain as markers in place, each curve and color honoring a singular moment of participation. Over time, this accumulation formed a landscape of many generations, a vivid testament to the people who have passed through, witnessed and remembered.
“Trace Me” reflects on how brief engagements can leave enduring echoes, how our projections — both literal and metaphorical — contribute to a shared topography of memory and presence.
